Glottocode
A stable identifier for a language, family or dialect — four letters and four digits, like ainu1240.
Glottolog assigns every languoid — its term covering families, languages and
dialects alike — “a unique and persistent identifier called Glottocode”,
consisting of four alphanumeric characters followed by four digits: ainu1240.
Names are unreliable keys. A language may be known by several, some of them names for the people rather than the language, and the same name can attach to different varieties in different sources. A Glottocode does not move.
Every profile here records one, and the build checks it against Glottolog. That check has already earned itself: three profiles cited the code for a whole family rather than the language, which is invisible when the code is buried in a link and obvious when it is a field.
